Janis A. Brewer

HURON - Janis Avery Ashdown Brewer, born in Buffalo, New York, August 24, 1930, passed away on March 12, 2018 after a brief illness.

   She is survived by her beloved husband, the Reverend Clair H. Brewer, Jr. of Huron, to whom she was married for 63 years; daughters Carol Brewer Kopkas (Jeff) of Berea, Linda Brewer Wilt and Susan Brewer Gainous of Lakewood; Mary Brewer Pitman of Pulaskie, PA; son John Brewer (Nancy) of Cooper City, FL, and grandchildren: Kristina Kopkas; Emily, Sara Kornokovich (Bryan), Colin, and Elijah Brewer, Stephanie Sui; Ian and Blake Wilt; Olivia and Evan Gainous; Ryan Crawford, and Liam and Aidan Pitman; and beloved sister-in-law, Joan Brewer; and 5 nephews and their families.

   She was preceded in death by her parents Dr. Norris B. and Ethel Warner Ashdown, sister Doris Dunham, mother- and father-in-law Ethel and Clair H. Brewer, Sr., of Lakewood, and 2 brothers-in-law, John T. Brewer of Rocky River, and Robert L. Dunham of Denver, Colorado.

   Janis graduated from Muskingham College in New Concord, Ohio where she met her husband, Clair. She graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree and a Bachelor of Science in Education cum laude in 1952. After graduation, she taught music in the Cleveland Public Schools for two years, after which she devoted her life to raising her family, was a girl scout leader, and worked at Educator’s Music in Lakewood for 20 years.

   In retirement, Janis was an elder of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and served on the session of the First Presbyterian Church in Huron, where she participated in the choral and bell choirs, the quilting group and the Lydia Circle, and various other volunteer activities. She was active in the Huron Practical Gardeners Club and the Huron Study Club, as well as being an accomplished violinist who performed in a variety of local orchestras and venues.

   She lived a life of service to the church, was devoted to her family, and will be missed terribly by all who have known and loved her.

   Friends may call Friday, March 16th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Foster Funeral Home & Crematory, 410 Main Street, Huron.

   The funeral service will be held Saturday, March 17th at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 225 Williams St, Huron with Rev. Deborah Bowsher and Rev. David W. Comstock, officiating.

   Burial will be at Lakewood Park Cemetery, Rocky River, at 2:30 p.m.
