Hugh Hanes

HURON – Hugh Hanes, 82, passed away November 2, 2017 in Columbus, Ohio.  He was born August 30, 1935 in Albion, Indiana, the son of Harold and Hilda Hanes.

Hugh received a B.S. Degree in Metallurgy from Purdue University in 1957. He was in ROTC, received his commission and served in the U.S. Ordnance Corp.  He received a M.S. Degree from The Ohio State University while residing and working in Columbus.  His early career started at Battelle Memorial Institute, specializing in beryllium related applications.  Hugh developed gas pressure bonding techniques used for manufacturing Naval reactor fuel elements and classified components. He developed gas pressure bonding and direct Hiping of beryllium. In 1975, he developed the world’s largest Hot Isostatic Pressure system.  In 1990, Hugh was inducted as a Fellow of the American Society for Metals.

In 1985, Hugh and June moved to Huron, where Hugh became plant manager for Brush Wellman (now Materion) in Elmore, Ohio.  Later, he lobbied for Metal Research Development Technology.

At Purdue, Hugh sang in the Purdue Glee Club.  In Columbus he was a past Master of his Masonic Lodge.

Hugh belonged to the First Presbyterian Church of Huron where he was currently a session member and choir member.

Surviving Hugh is his wife, June (Graves),who he married in Bloomington, Indian in 1956; his son, Jay (Eleanor) of Meadville, Pa.; daughter Kay of Columbus; four grandchildren; Benjamin, Cameron, Caroline, and Hawk; one great grandson, Noah; and four of Hugh's siblings survive; Howard, Hannah, Hal, and Hope. His brother Harold Jr. preceded him in death.

A Memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov 11th at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 225 Williams St., Huron, with Rev. David Aber officiating.  A luncheon will follow the service at the church.
